Iceland – Day 6: Leaving Highlands

This day we finally checked out from our Highlands hotel with tiny rooms and started our journey towards Iceland’s eastern coast. We made a bunch of stops on our way to see some amazing locations so this post is quite long and picture-heavy, so enjoy.

At first the weather was a bit too moody, with rain and low visibility. On the other hand as soon as it cleared up a bit the colours of the landscape were so saturated that they felt unreal (and I still feel like they are).

Some time later we stopped at the Bláhylur’s crater lake “brother” – Ljótipollur or how locals call it – Ugly Puddle. Usually the views here are quite amazing, but in this weather we had to improvise a bit. But I do like my shots from here, quite atmospheric.

Then we entered the same lava field we photographed in the afternoon of day 3, but this time we turned left, to the other side from the camping site. Funny how at one point we literally stopped to pee, but then spent like 30 minutes photographing and flying drones.

We were chugging along the gravel road when suddenly the view (below) opened and we stopped almost immediately as the sun was lighting the slopes with the sheep. Unfortunately it went away as we were taking out our cameras, but the location was beautiful even without that light. I regret not taking my tripod at the start – we were so entranced by the light that I only remembered about it 20 minutes later. Waterproof boots helped a lot here, but I should’ve taken the wellies from the car, would’ve made it easier and maybe made some shots better as I could’ve gone deeper into the water. Well, lessons learned for the next time.

We could’ve easily spent another hour or two here, but we had to move on. We crossed several streams along the way. We stopped after one of them and I tried finding a composition (this time I wore wellies) but nothing interesting came out. But literally around the corner this view welcomed us.

We spent quite a bit of time at this location as the light constantly changed and was purely magical sometimes.

I tried very hard to avoid stepping on these trees.
Amazing light.

The view to the other side was just as amazing. Just to demonstrate how quickly the weather changes in Iceland – time between two shots below is just 15-20 minutes.

We literally moved 500 meters in our car and started shooting this direction. The rain has finally stopped and the drone pilots rejoiced and doubled their efforts.

Chris climbed the rock formation to pose for the shots and video.

This was one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in my life, but the light was fading and we had a long way to go still. We had our sandwitch-based lunch in the car and moved on. But the light chased us and we had to stop once again in this tranquil valley.

The light kept fading and returning back, here’s the short video from the car of our descent into another valley.

Chris stopped at one of the rest points to check the weather map and find the best location to shoot next. While he did so, he encouraged us to find the small waterfall nearby and explore a bit of that area. The waterfall was indeed quite small, but the whole area was so picturesque. I felt a very Scottish vibe from this spot, see for yourself.

Undeniably Scottish landscape. Only characteristic lava formations give away Icelandic origin.
Agung flying.
Handheld pano of 3 shots, almost drowned the camera.

Our next location was VERY epic. First of all it is quite difficult to get to – you need to cross a very deep stream, even our monster car had to go slowly and very carefully. And the road upwards was narrow and steep. Couple times we had to pass other monster cars and it was quite a bit sketchy. But the view from the view point is more than worth it. We had to wait in the car for the rain to stop for maybe 10-15 minutes, but then the visibility vastly improved and wet soil created this very saturated colours everywhere.

The waterfall is called Ófærufoss, and the valley – Eldgjá. We contemplated the idea of staying until sunset, but the clouds started moving in fast in the west, covering the possible sunset, and we still had good 2-3 hours of driving ahead of us so at some point we had to pack up and leave, but not before we moved to the viewpoint nearby with a more direct view on the waterfall.

Agung was so impressed by that area that he did a short same-day edit of his drone footage.

Completely mesmerised by what we saw that day we continued our journey in almost complete silence. Closer to the coast the gravel road ended and we stopped to inflate back the tyres near a bridge. On the other side of the river there were some horses in this soft evening light with no wind. I couldn’t resist taking the shot.

We finally got to our hotel – quite nice one by the way with big rooms, fast wifi and hot water in the shower. Next day was promising, but I already started to experience a “beauty overload”. Stay tuned for more.
