Iceland – Day 8: Diamond Beach & StokKsnes

It wasn’t easy to wake up at 4 am, but it was all worth it in the end. Fortunately it only took us about 15 minutes to get to the Diamond Beach from our hotel so we were one of the first on the location. Chris told us we were lucky to have this much ice on the beach, both in terms of quantity and quality. There was indeed a lot of ice in all kinds and shapes and sizes. But it is extremely challenging to get a good shot here – just as you find a composition you like, it is washed away with the next rogue wave. Those waves also endanger the gear and the photographer so you have to be on the constant look out for them as well. All in all it was very interesting and challenging couple hours.

Fish (?)

The second hardest thing was to avoid getting other photographers in your shot and avoid getting into other photographers’ shots as well. Fortunately there was a lot of ice, so I ventured 50-70 meters up the beach to not interfere and not be interfered with. While I was going that way I decided on a whim to take a couple of handheld shots, which turned out to be one of my favourite from this location.

Then I saw Chris poring over a certain group of icebergs and I joined him.

This is how all this madness looks like from the side. It was still pretty early, so the beach was mostly occupied by excited photographers.

The light started to get brighter and brighter with every minute to the point it became hard to keep the long-ish exposure to smooth out the waves. At some point I just packed my gear and enjoyed the sunrise. In 15-20 minutes our group returned to the car and went back to the hotel for some well deserved breakfast and to rest a couple hours before moving on. The plan was to get to the famous Stokksnes peninsula. I couldnt rest much, so I went out in hopes to get some photos of horses nearby, but they were too far away and it was raining, so I settled on these sheep.

Despite the rain cloud over our hotel, the weather over Stokksnes was quite different. This is a very beautiful with volcanic beach overlooking one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland – Vestrahorn. The place is a bit over-photographed, but for a reason. I’ve seen quite a few amazing shots made here and I tried to replicate some of them. Unfortunately the light was a bit harsh and we did not have time to stick around for sunset, but I still like couple of my shots from this location.

I had to explore quite a bit to find this puddle for the iconic reflection shot, but it was all worth. Some inconsiderate person left footprints all over, but with the help of some photoshop magic I was able to hide them, so they are not as distracting. I “shared” this puddle with couple German photographers, who were here on their own without a group. They were smarter than me though and had their wellies on. My waterproof boots held on, but in the end they were so full of this fine Icelandic volcanic sand that it took me good 5 minutes to get rid of most of it in the hotel afterwards (and I only managed to clean them completely back in Guernsey).

I was lucky to hang around chatting with Germans, as literally in 10 minutes after the first shot (pano of 4 shots to be fair), the cloud passed in front of the sun and the light has improved drastically.

On our way back we saw a couple groups of Icelandic horses and went out to shoot them despite the rain.

There was a very good Aurora forecast for the night and the weather blessed us with a clear skies over the Glacier Lagoon, so that was our plan for the night. Stay tuned for the next post.
